McCluskey: Tories set new benchmark with rank hypocrisy on party funding

31 July 2014

Addressing the comments made by Justice Minister Chris Grayling about Labour party funding, the general secretary of Unite, the UK’s biggest union, Len McCluskey, said:

“Even by their own standards of rank hypocrisy, the Tories are today setting a new benchmark for double standards. They denounce trade unions while they fill their pockets with Moscow gold supplied by an ever-increasing number of donations from dodgy Russian oligarchs.

“Trade union funding is totally transparent and is overseen by two independent statutory bodies. Compare this to the Tories who fill their coffers with millions of pounds from nameless individuals who use smoke and mirrors to hide their identities.

“If the Tory Party seeks transparency then Grant Shapps, the chairman of the Tory party, should come clean and tell us who the mystery donors are behind the private dining club that has so far donated over £140,000 to his constituency party and what favours they are getting in return.

“This country is crying out for a government that will deal with the huge crisis in the NHS, that has the answers to the poverty pay that is afflicting hundreds of thousands of families across the country, that can tackle the misery for millions in housing need. Today the Tory party has shown once again that they are not the party to deal with the real problems facing Britain.”
