Global Road Safety Week, 23-29 April 2007

Today is the start of the first United Nations Global Road Safety Week, focusing particularly on young road users, but generally an opportunity to raise awareness of road safety. Globally, around 1.2 million people are killed in road accidents every year. In the UK 3,000 deaths and 237,000 injuries on the roads every year cost the NHS £470 million and the economy £8 billion according to the Audit Commission. Around a third of these are work-related but this does not show up in the HSE’s workplace accident statistics as the HSE does not deal with road safety.

Amicus reveals Opposition attempt to scupper construction law

David Cameron is spearheading an assault on new health and safety regulations, designed to enhance worker protection and encourage practical solutions to good health and safety management. The assault takes the form of an Early Day Motion calling for the new Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations 2007 to be annulled. Amicus believes the timing couldn’t have been any worse, with the whole world watching the UK, as construction work is about to begin for the 2012 Olympic Games. The health and safety management team for the Olympic Games construction project have already put together proposals that are in line with the new regulations. These regulations were only signed by the Minister for Health and Safety on 7 February and laid in Parliament on 15 February with a view to implementation on 6 April.

RSI Awareness Day, Wednesday 28 February

To mark RSI Awareness Day the TUC is calling on the Government to help stop the epidemic of the condition that affects tens of thousands of workers across the UK by introducing typing and keyboard skills into schools. It is estimated that in 2004/05 nearly 375,000 people suffered from a musculoskeletal disorder affecting the upper limbs or neck that was caused or made worse by their current or past work. RSI is easily preventable if employers undertake a risk assessment and provide proper ergonomic equipment and working methods for staff, however most employers are not currently doing this, says the TUC.

Better backs and return to work event, Tuesday 5 December, Wakefield

At The National Coal Mining Museum. HSE and Local Authorities are raising awareness of back pain caused by work related activities, how to reduce it and how to help people return to work after a back injury. This is a free event aimed at employers and managers in the Manufacturing Sector and will provide information on preventing back injuries, managing sickness absence and return to work.

The campaign aims to present a more positive, proactive and manageable approach to stress management. We often only associate stress with major life issues such as divorce or financial hardship but a huge amount of our anxiety comes from minor day to day annoyances. When these build up they undermine our natural ability to cope, leaving us tired, and anxious, irritable and making stress more infectious.

European Safety Week 2006: a Safe Start for young workers

European Safety Week runs from 23-27 October 2006 and this year’s theme is the safety of young workers, in particular those starting their first jobs. Employers rarely take the needs of young workers into consideration and, as young people rarely have any training in health and safety awareness during their education, most start their first job without the faintest idea of how to work safely.
