Unite Wales today welcomed the UK government's decision to drop certain aspects of the trade union bill that relate to Wales. Following pressure from Labour Lords the government was forced to make a last minute U-turn.
Andy Richards, Unite Wales secretary commented:
“This is a great victory for unions and Labour peers who have forced the UK government to make this last minute U-turn. The Trade Union bill is a vindictive and divisive piece of legislation which puts to bed the myth that the Conservative party is on the side of working people.
"The Welsh Labour government showed real leadership in opposing the bill, sending a strong message to Westminster that they were not prepared to accept damaging changes that could have wrecked the social partnership arrangements that are delivering for Wales.
"Although we have achieved this victory for Wales the broader fight against the Trade Union bill will continue. Despite the changes the bill will still make it harder for UK workers to defend themselves and for trade unions to operate effectively."
