Unite accuses Glasgow council company of illegal strike-breaking at Emirates arena to defeat industrial action.
Unite Scotland is in dispute with Glasgow Life concerning pay allowances for setting up events and de-rigging works at the Emirates stadium. Glasgow Life is an arms length company controlled by the council.
Strikes have taken place on the 23, 27 and 28 December. A further day of strike action took place today - 29 December. Glasgow Life managers are continuing to employ sub-contractors to complete work schedules affected by the strikes. This is strike-breaking by any other name.
Unite has also lodged further grievances with Glasgow Life concerning union members being asked by Glasgow Life managers if they are a member of Unite and intending to take strike action. This is a breach of current industrial relations laws.
The controlling board of Glasgow Life is chaired by the deputy leader of the city council, SNP councillor David McDonald. He is joined on the board by some of the best-known names of Scottish business. Do they know what is being done in their name?
Eddie Cassidy who is the convenor of Unite at Glasgow City Council says: “The independent directors of Glasgow Life is like a roll call of the great and the good in Glasgow. So do Sir Angus Grossart, Lee McConnell, Professor Anton Muscatelli, Professor Lesley Sawers and Amanda McMillan OBE know what is being done in their name. Do they know Glasgow Life managers are employing strike-breaking and bullying tactics in the face of a couple of dozen poorly paid workers workers trying to get a better deal?”
