Unite will demonstrate at the Standard Life AGM tomorrow (Tuesday 14th May), telling the company’s CEO and shareholders that its investments in the Crossrail blacklisting consortium BFK are a stain on their reputation.
Standard Life Investment Ltd owns a 10% shareholding in the Kier Group, one of three companies comprising the BFK (BAM, Ferrovial and Kier) consortium. Unite has evidence suggesting that the BFK consortium is responsible for the termination of a Crossrail contract where 28 workers were sacked for trade union activity and raising basic health and safety concerns.
BFK currently holds contracts for the delivery of key Scottish Government infrastructure projects like the Scottish Borders Rail Link - worth up to £300 million - and both BAM and Kier were named in the Scottish Affairs Committee Interim Report as subscribers to The Consulting Association (TCA) blacklist.
As part of its anti-blacklisting action, Unite is now shining a light on companies that invest in blacklisting practitioners.
Unite Senior Scottish Organiser Roz Foyer said, “Standard Life is a Scottish institution and extols its heritage and status but its association with Kier is a stain on its reputation.
28 workers on the London Crossrail project have been treated abysmally by the BFK consortium and it is vital that Standard Life’s shareholders are fully aware of Kier’s shameful part in this blacklisting action.
Blacklisting is a national disgrace that has ruined lives and indelibly stained our construction industry and its biggest employers, yet it is still happening today.
So our message to Standard Life CEO David Nish and his shareholders is simple: If you associate or work with blacklisters then you condone this despicable practice, so think again about your investments in Kier.”
