Unite shocked over plans to close ‘historic’ Rollin Bulldog Tools

01 May 2013

Unite, the UK’s largest trade union, says its members are ‘shocked’ at Rollin Bulldog’s proposals to close the ‘historic’ Wigan forge factory that has been making quality garden tools since 1780.

39 jobs at the Wigan forge factory, which makes solid forged garden spades and tools by British craftsman, will be lost if the closure goes ahead. The manufacturing forge, which is the last of its kind in the UK, also manufactures a wide range of tools for the construction and farming markets.

Commenting on the proposed closure, Unite regional officer, Franny Joyce said: “We are shocked and saddened to hear this iconic British company plans to close the last manufacturing forge of its kind in the UK.

“Tools have been manufactured here for over 230 years, since the days of the American Revolution.

“This is clearly a devastating blow to our members and generations of families who have worked at this plant.

“Unite is seeking clarity on the rationale behind the closure proposals and an explanation as to why such a successful operation is being closed.”
