Unite for Labour Weekend - 10/11 May 2014

08 May 2014

Danny Freeman, Unite London political officer issued the following call for support 'The next couple of weeks are the most crucial in the run up to our local and European elections. I am writing to you to see if you can you spare a couple of hours over this weekend 10 May and 11 May in helping us to canvass and leaflet in various areas in London to ensure a Labour victory in the local and European elections on 22 May.

I know we are all extremely busy but if you could just spare an hour or two over this weekend it would make all the difference. There will be Unite members as well as other trade unionists/labour party members so they will be entertaining and good natured events and a chance to meet colleagues and comrades.

London local elections - In the London area we have identified several constituencies where we have Unite candidates or there is a threat from UKIP. It would be fantastic if we could mobilise and help our fellow Unite/ Labour party colleagues. They are in different parts of London so hopefully there will be one near to where you live. If you cannot make one of these you may wish to help in your local Labour CLP. The areas where we are helping to organise events are Bermondsey and Old Southwark, Croydon Central, Hornsey and Wood Green, Twickenham, Sutton, and Kingston.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark
Saturday 10th May there is a special '2 sides of the same coin' event at The Blue. There will be Labour party front bencher attending as well as a stall for the day where canvassing will be run from.

European Elections
Lucy Anderson, (Unite member) is one of the prospective Labour Candidates for London in the European Elections which are also taking place on May 22nd. Lucy is third on the London Labour list which means she is the candidate most likely to benefit from a high Labour turnout and be elected. Lucy is someone that reflects the values of Unite the union.

The UK economy is intrinsically linked to the wider EU economy, which accounts for about 60 per cent of its export market. 4.2 million British jobs, including 542,000 London jobs are dependent on trade with the EU. Leaving the EU would not only damage the UK economy, but would mean social rights granted by European legislation - maternity and paternity pay, annual leave, health and safety minimums - would be at risk.

As a union we fight to maintain and improve terms & conditions yet the right wing parties and in particular UKIP want to take away even the minimum rights that Europe guarantees you -we cannot let them!

Can I take this opportunity to thank you in advance for any help you may be able to offer this weekend and over the next couple of weeks to ensure a Labour victory!'
