Peter Kavanagh, regional secretary, offers support to Bangladeshi trade unions fighting for justice after Tazreen factory fire

01 December 2014

The regional secretary, Peter Kavanagh, and regional chair, Jim Kelly, both visited Bangladesh earlier this year as part of a delegation to meet trade union leaders.

As part of their visit they met with leaders of the National Garment Workers Federation (NGWF), this union is campaigning for justice for workers killed and injured in the Tarzeen factory fire in 2012.

In order to assist the NGWF’s attempts to put pressure on the factory owners to pay full compensation, Peter Kavanagh has contacted them expressing our support and seeking out information about UK buyers that Unite may be able to apply pressure on to pay compensation.

This is one part of the region’s strategy to support and encourage the trade union movement in Bangladesh which has rapidly developed in the aftermath of such industrial disasters.
