Unite members at Hanson Building Products near Peterborough have voted unanimously in favour of industrial action.
As we reported on 1 March, the members are all kiln burners, a specialist group at the brickworks who control the kiln temperatures. They have been forced into striking to defend their holiday entitlement, which Hanson management have reduced by four days.
Despite the fact that all thirteen kiln burners voted for industrial action, the employer has declined Unite’s offer to sit down with an Acas mediator with a view to resolving the dispute.
“Unite members are standing firm against this attack on their terms and conditions,” said regional industrial officer Tony Ellingford. “We remain open to further talks but, unless Hanson management is prepared to recommence meaningful discussions, the strike will begin on 8 April.”
The kiln burners need your help – please send messages of support and arrange any donations to the strike fund via Stan Dow, Unite’s senior steward at the brickworks. You can email him at Stanley.Dow@ntlworld.com
