Accept this year’s Cycle Cuba Challenge and you will earn a unique insight into Cuban life and culture, as well as helping visually impaired Cuban school children and supporting the vital work of the Cuba Solidarity Campaign.
The 13-day trip runs from 24 April to 6 May, offering an experience that money alone cannot buy. The key qualification for a place on the Cycle Challenge is to raise at least £2699 in sponsorship. Members of Unite’s London & Eastern region, can qualify for a much reduced sponsorship target thanks to the region’s backing for the project.
At its heart is an exhilarating 315-km cycle ride on quiet, rural roads, with opportunities to experience vibrant Cuban culture at first hand. Enjoy tropical scenery, vibrant colours, stunning colonial architecture and images of the Cuban revolution.
The trip will raise funds for the Abel Santamaría School in Havana for visually impaired children and involves delivering much-needed educational materials direct to the school.
• The 315-km cycle ride starts at Sancti Spíritus, one of Cuba’s seven original Spanish towns, to the historic city of Santa Clara.
• The cycle route takes in Trinidad, Cuba’s best preserved colonial town and a Unesco World Heritage site, then the route dips alongside the turquoise blue Caribbean.
• At Cienfuegos, ciclistas have been invited to participate in the inspiring May Day Rally alongside thousands of Cuban workers with flags and banners flying high.
• Heading inland, riders go to Lake Hanabanilla, high in the Escambray Mountains and onto Santa Clara, site of Che Guevara’s evocative mausoleum and historic victory against Batista’s troop train.
This study tour starts and finishes in Havana and offers plenty of opportunity to explore this fascinating capital.
