Since 2008, over 2000 Unite members working in the London buses sector have been transferred to another employer. That's roughly 10% of all drivers, enough to start a new large bus company.
In the last twelve months over 1200 drivers - enough to start a new medium-sized bus company - have left. Every driver that leaves is replaced by someone on a new starter rate.
New starter rates vary between the 20+ employers in the sector, from around £9 to over £12 per hour.
These factors have combined to create wide pay discrepancies in the sector.
Unite is campaigning to achieve:
- Single pay negotiations for the entire sector, so that pay discrepancies can be gradually removed.
- A unified minimum new starter rate that no London bus employer can undercut.
