Mick Sherriff, Unite shop steward at the Nissan plant in Sunderland and a member of the founding Executive Council of Unite died recently after battling a long illness.
It was my privilege to represent Unite at Mick's funeral on December 6th 2012 along with fellow National Officer Tony Murphy.
250 people attended the service including several Unite Officers from the North East, Nissan Shop Stewards, former Unite officers, members of Nissan staff and personnel.
Mick's wife Julie and daughter Lauren asked for a special reference to all the kind messages from Unite Officials, the Unite Executive Council, National Industrial Sector Committee's and activists.
Reference was also made to the wider trade Union movement and the family thanked Unite in particular for being such an important part of Mick's life.
For all who knew Mick you will be pleased to know that the reception went well into the afternoon with Sunderland Football Clubs last game at Roker Park in 1997 shown on a large screen throughout the day!
Mick will be sadly missed by all of us who had the pleasure of his company whether at work or socially. He really was a man of tremendous moral stature who's strong socialist beliefs and love for his family made him special.
