Session 1 - Maximising the contribution of the school nursing team : A reflection on the Department of Health guidance

Held on Wednesday 2nd May 2012

The session was delivered by Rosalind Godson (Unite Health Sector Professional Officer).  During the session Ros gave members an update on the guidance issued by the Department of Health in March 2012 and CPHVA's activity on school nursing.  The session was aimed at members who work in England, however members were welcome to join in from across the UK if they wanted to find out what’s going on in England.

Session 2 - The Health Visitor Implementation Plan : An update

Held on Thursday 3rd May 2012

The session was delivered jointly by Dave Munday (Unite Health Sector Professional Officer) and Pauline Watts (Department of Health Professional Lead for Health Visiting).  If you listen to the recording, you will get an update as to the Implementations Plan progress.  This training was aimed at members who work in England, however members were welcome to join in from across the UK if they want to find out what’s going on in England.

This session was delivered by Unite/MHNA Editorial Advisory Board Chair and lecturer Mike Ramsay where he discussed results from research that looked at what value older people put on their CPN's. Session 7 - Happy Birthday to you; A health visiting 150th

Held on 18 October 2012

This session was delivered by Unite Professional Officer Dave Munday where he talked about the 150th anniversary of health visiting.  The session included information about the development of the profession, the changes in society over that period how CPHVA has changed over the years to ensure its members have the support needed to improve and develop.  It also included some photos that we found whilst researching the anniversary.

This session was delivered by Unite Professional Officer Jane Beach where she reminded members about the importance of accurate records. She also talked about the responsibilities of both our registered and non-registered members in the health sector.

Session 9 - Agenda for Change, what next? Does down banding put patients at risk?

This session was delivered by Unite National Officer in the Health Sector, Rachael Maskell, in which she discussed Agenda for Change and how in some organisations' employers have attempted to down-band staff. She spoke about how the AfC system works in practice and gave some helpful information about how to resist these attempts locally.

Session 10 - Are you well organised?: Making it easier to tackle work-place-based issues together

This session was delivered by Unite Health SectorOrganiser, Kate Oultram, in which she discussed how members can organise locally to ensure that they improve and defend services and improve work place conditions for others. Some of the things she spoke about included  how you find out where members are, who local reps are, how they communicate and how to raise issues.

Session 11 - Transitions away from the NHS: The impact of staff transfers caused by the Health & Social Care Act

This session was delivered by Unite National Officer Barrie Brown, in which he discussed the changes that are happening in our NHS including the developing picture of transfers of staff away from the NHS to alternative providers. This session was especially relevant to our reps in England, but any member listening from outside of England would hear about what's happening.

Session 12 - Writing for publication

This session was delivered by Community Practitioner Journal Editor, Polly Moffat, in which she talked about how to write for professional publications. There was specific information about how to write for our in-house publications but the session also covered more generalist advice for any professional publication. For any budding professional writers out there, this session was a real confidence builder.

In this session Unite in Health Professional Officer for regulation, Jane Beach, spoke about the report of the public inquiry into events at the Mid Staffordshire Foundation Trust with a focus on the recommendations and the implications of these for Unite members. She also discussed the governments initial response.

Session 16 - Social media in the health sector: A Unite in Health briefing.

In this session Unite in Health professional officer, Dave Munday spoke about social media in the health sector, giving some examples of where it's being used to develop services and campaign on issues. He also covered areas where health care workers got in trouble for using social media and discussed some of the common pitfalls.

Session 17 - What are the responsibilities of healthcare professionals towards vulnerable adults and children following from the updated policies from the four countries of the UK.

In this session Unite in Health professional officer, Ros Godson covered the responsibilities of healthcare professionals towards vulnerable adults and children following from the updated policies from the four countries of the UK, particularly 'Working Together' (England), National Guidance for Child Protection (Scotland) and the Child Practice review framework (Wales).

Session 18 - Appraisals best practice and performance related pay .

Rachael Maskell, Unite's head of health revealed all about performance-related-pay and how employers are planning to use performance to make further cuts to terms and conditions, and ultimately, to patient services.  Also, Unite in Health organiser, Kate Oultram, gave hints and tips about best practice to help make the most of your appraisal (performance) or development review, in the light of the employers' aims.

Session 19 - Understanding children’s speech, language and communication development

Lisa Morgan, speech and language therapist and professional director for The Communication Trust, provided an overview of the importance of speech, language and communication for children’s overall development and an understanding of the typical development of children’s speech, language and communication skills.

Session 20 - Managing sleep problems in infants and toddlers  .

Ruth Oshikanlu, midwife and practising Health Visitor in London, focused on the management of sleep problems in infants and toddlers. She gave an overview of sleep patterns in children and adults, and outlined reasons for poor sleeping patterns and how to manage them.

Session 21 - Tune In to your baby

In this session Ruth Oshikanlu, a midwife and practising Health Visitor in London shared her rationale for writing the book ‘Tune In To Your Baby: Because Babies Don’t Come with An Instruction Manual’ – an interactive parenting book that covers pregnancy to age four and highlighted some key features and benefits of the book and discussed how community practitioners can use it to empower pregnant women and new mothers to be better prepared for their parenting role.

Session 22 - NHS Pension Scheme

Bryan Freake, Unite's pensions officer,  talks about the current NHS Pension Scheme and how members will be affected by the changes in 2015.

Please note an omission in the presentation: 'the new Care scheme - the accrual rate is 1/54' and  there was also an error: 'A 1995 Section payment can be drawn at 60 instead of 50 years of age'.  


Session 23 - Child Trafficking

Imogen Spencer-Chapman, children’s services practitioner at the NSPCC Child Trafficking Advice Centre, explored  issues relating to migrant children who are trafficked to the UK.   The areas she covered included the definition of child trafficking, what children are trafficked to the UK for, statistics and trends, current debates in the field, and the role of health professionals in identifying, protecting and safeguarding trafficked children.

Session 24  - Understanding children’s speech, language & communication development part 2

Shona Crichton, an experienced speech and language therapist with The Communication Trust, focused on how to identify children and young people with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN).  The session linked to areas of knowledge set out in the Speech, language and Communication Framework.

Session 26  - Austerity and Mental Health

Senior lecturer in mental health Steve Hemmingway and MHNA chair George Coxon provided MHN practitioners the opportunity to participate in discussions on this important issue using presentation platform taken from the recent presentation given to the Horatio European scientific mental health nursing conference in Istanbul.
