The Care.data scheme will start in March which will mean that patient data held by GPs will be made available not just to NHS organisations but to non NHS bodies including private health and insurance companies who will be able to buy patient  information.

As you will be aware that in the English NHS,  the Care.data scheme will start in March  which will mean that patient data held by GPs will be made available not just to NHS organisations but to non NHS bodies including private health and insurance companies who will be able to buy patient  information. Patients are able to opt out from their medical records being disclosed but the RCGP has criticised the implementation of the scheme because the public has not been properly informed about the benefits and safeguards for the scheme.

Healthwatch England has criticised the patient information leaflet and asked for the implementation to be delayed . A number of commentators have called for changes to the legal framework for the scheme which is meant to provide information on an anonymised basis. A petition calling on Jeremy Hunt to stop the sale of patient medical records has signed up over 200,000 supporters and the link to the petition is below.
Companies will be able to buy information on all of us from the NHS’s new patient database – including everything from mental health conditions, sexually transmitted infections and diseases like cancer – linked to your postcode, gender and ethnicity.

Tell Jeremy Hunt and the Department of Health not to sell our medical records.
