Mulberry Tavern, Sheffield City centre

There is now a permanent display of images from the archives of the late Sheffield photographer Martin Jenkinson at the Mulberry Tavern in Sheffield City centre.

Justine Jenkinson in front of her dad's photographs in the Mulberry Tavern, SheffieldMartin’s daughter, Justine, has taken over the management of Martin’s archives and the display came about because of recent exhibitions and posts of images on social media. These attracted a lot of attention and so it was felt a permanent display would be an ideal way of helping  keep Martin's legacy alive.

The images that were chosen by Justine were a few of the popular iconic ones from the 1984/85 miners' strike plus some of historical Sheffield, which are of past land-marks and show how much the city has changed.

Justine states that: “Some of the images will be changed every few months so people can see more from the archives, which while including some of his industrial and political images will also show his ability to capture imaginative and artistic images of people and everyday life at home and abroad.

“I am really pleased with the good feedback received so far and the great support I've had from The Mulberry Tavern in promoting the display. I also have an exhibition on at present  'Sheffield Images of the Past - People, Industry & Places' which is being shown at various venues in Sheffield for the next 4 months. (2016) This is a collection of images taken in and around Sheffield from the 1980s to 2011, which includes photographs of landmarks past and present, industry and political activity. Some of them have never been displayed before and I had to have them scanned from negatives. The exhibition dates are as follows:

Harland Cafe                                                 (started 29 Feb) on now till 28 April
Java Lounge, Hillsborough                            29 April to 1 July
Pictures of Sheffield Old & New, The Moor    2 July to end of August

He left an archive of 30 years’ worth of images for which I am regularly being requested for use in journals, publications, film, television and exhibitions worldwide. I also receive orders for prints frequently especially when there is an exhibition on. I’m trying to promote the fact that as well as his industrial and political images he has a wide range of images from different walks of life through the years.

“I am going through the digital image archives, contact sheets for negatives, his work diaries, old newspapers and publications in order to catalogue and add more to the website, as there are many images that haven’t been widely seen before.

“I am at present planning our next stall which will be at the Chesterfield May Day event at which we will have a mini display of Martin’s iconic political images, selling and taking orders for prints. I’m applying to have stalls and/or mini displays at future local events such as the local Farmer’s market and Art in the Gardens
