A better deal for you in Lloyds Banking Group
The current capital crisis has rightly placed the public
spotlight on the role of the financial services industry within our
economy. Excessive risk taking, short term thinking coupled with a
fundamentally unsound incentives culture has led us to question the
role of bankers and their city institutions.
At a time of rampant unemployment created by the chaotic and
greed based decision making of the City, we often forget that not
all employees within financial services are fat cats. In fact the
average pay of a Lloyds Banking Group worker is significantly less
than £18,000 per year - hardly big money. In addition, thousands of
such ordinary bank workers have lost their jobs as intense
restructuring throughout the industry has its biggest impact at the
sharp end.
As the bank workers union, Unite has fought tooth and nail
against job cuts, assisting members wherever possible, and will
continue to do so. However, the story for our members is not all
doom and gloom.
The Union has started a vibrant and strategic organising
campaign within finance starting with the recently formed Lloyds
Banking Group. Led by Director of Organising Sharon Graham and lead
officials Rob MacGregor, Wendy Dunsmore and Gwyn Bates, the first
phase of the campaign has been a major success with elected combine
chair and Lloyds employee Glen Miller playing a pivotal role in the
campaign’s development. Already the campaign is delivering for
Lloyds workers:
- Training for over 80 shop stewards completed
- Over 1,000 members organised
- Lloyds combine (reps co-ordinating committee) established
As the campaign develops, work will intensify to build the Union
within the Lloyds Group focussing on delivering real improvements
in conditions for workers on key issues identified by the reps:
- Ending the unfair bonus
- Ending unfair targets
- Ending unpaid overtime
The finance industry is rightly in the public eye and with this
organising campaign Unite hopes to refocus attention away from the
fat cats and onto the issues that matter!
