Keep Cadbury independent - workers take petition into the heart of the community

14th January 2010

Workers at Cadbury’s Marlbrook factory, near Leominster, are taking their fight to protect their jobs and their company’s independence into the heart of their community.

Date: Saturday 16th January, 2010
Time: 11.30am
Venue: Outside Morrisons’ store, Leominster, Herefordshire

With a bidding war erupting for the confectionery company - led by debt-laden global food giant Kraft - Unite members at Cadbury face an uncertain future.

Determined to fight for their futures, workers from the Marlbrook factory will be outside Morrisons’ store in Leominster on Saturday 16thth January to encourage lovers of Cadbury to sign their petition.

The petition calls on the local community, government and MPs to show their support for the workers by signing up to Unite’s ’Keep Cadbury independent’ campaign.  The campaign is fighting for security in any takeover for the chocolate maker’s workforce.

Unite national officer, Jennie Formby, said: “It is the hard-working staff and Cadbury's loyal customers who have made this company a UK success story, so it is wrong that both are given so little thought in this bidding war.

“If Kraft or any other bidder swoops for Cadbury, the consequences could be devastating not just for the workers, their families and the communities, but for Cadbury itself.  We want to keep Cadbury in the UK, producing products we all love - not swallowed up as a trophy for some far-off boardroom.

“This is why we are taking this campaign to the heart of the Cadbury community.  We are asking chocolate lovers to support this fight to keep Cadbury’s chocolate and its loyal workforce in the UK."

Unite members are planning further community events throughout January.  The union is also continuing to urge Cadbury-lovers to sign the campaign petition today at: www.welovecadbury.com.
