Unite for
Jobs for general industries workers
The General Industries sector is one of the largest and most
diverse sectors of Unite.
The effect of the crisis on those groups varies
dramatically. For example, companies linked to Medical and
Oil having so far not suffered the same jobs losses as others
in the sector.
The story to date is of reductions in the workforce at Linde,
Nacco, F G Wilsons and Caterpillar to mention just a few.
Most companies have let the temps and agency workers go, reduced
shifts or have some arrangements covering periods of lay off or
short -time working.
Renold group have closed their final salary scheme, reduced
shifts and implemented short time working.
L'Oreal is closing its facility in Wales and moving production
back to France.
Air Products Wrexham is threatening to close the only
manufacturer of large air separation units in the UK, openly
admitting that in the future these units would be made in China,
leaving the UK Plc without a supply chain manufacturer in the run
up to clean coal technologies.
At the small size employer level it is impossible to predict the
total losses, as hundreds of these companies fail everyday finding
themselves unable to pay the bills and therefore forced into
administration.
Unfortunately, without support from the UK Government now, more
jobs are at risk and so will be the opportunity to build upon our
manufacturing heritage, to ensure these high skilled, high-value
jobs are there for future generations.
It's a time to stand up and be counted; we cannot allow those
good employers to fail while the feckless flourish.
