Stressbusters campaign
Conquering
stress in the workplace
Unite’s Not for Profit sector is calling on all
workplace reps to conduct a new survey on stress.
Ideally reps will be able to conduct this survey with the support
of management or jointly with them, although in some workplaces
this will not be possible. Reps should make sure they carry out the
survey in their own workplace, and once they have got the
figures thery should analyse and present the results to
management.
The survey is accessible electronically or in paper format.
Unite will then ask reps to analyse the results, and it is
important that management is supportive of the work reps are
doing.
That’s why Unite has produced a letter to management about this
campaign which reps can address, sign and forward on to management
– download the letter.
If there is no representative in your workplace, Unite is
calling on activists to use the tools provided to bring change in
your workplace. Suggestions include forming a working party with
management, but even before that once the survey has been conducted
and analysed, the next step is to call a meeting with the
management.
Even if there are policies and processes in place, it is
important to review their effectiveness and upgrade action plans
where necessary. A working party may be part of negotiations and
consultations committee, health and safety committee, or a new
sub-group.
In September 2010, Unite will issue reps a new guide on
work-related stress, which will provide the information needed to
put good policies and practices in place. Unite will also run
training for representatives to ensure they are equipped to lead
the campaign in the workplace.
Towards the end of 2010 Unite will be holding a one day
conference in London for reps and management to hear from leading
experts in the field and help develop an on-going action plan.
