Love fashion - hate sweatshops
Unite is backing War on Want's Love fashion - hate
sweatshops campaign
The clothes people buy in the UK come at a terrible human cost.
Millions of workers around the world suffer poverty wages and
exploitation, producing cheap fashion for high street shops.
War on Want exposed garment workers in Bangladesh doing 80 hours a
week for as little as 7p an hour.
The UK government’s approach of supporting purely voluntary
initiatives for improving the rights of overseas workers has shown
that asking companies to regulate themselves has not worked.
That's why the Love fashion - hate sweatshops campaign was
launched. The campaign, supported by a mix of designers,
trade unionists and celebrities, calls on the government to
regulate companies in order to protect the rights of workers
supplying UK companies.
By regulating the business practices of UK retailers we want to
ensure that overseas workers are guaranteed a living wage, decent
working conditions and the right to join a trade union.
So get involved and add your voice to the call:
- Sign the War on Want petition
to support workers' rights
- Submit your picture and personalised message to the
web
gallery like Unite deputy general secretary Jack
Dromey and assistant general secretary Diana Holland (right)
- Write to your MP asking them to support the campaign.
