Arguing for the alternative
Unite is at
the forefront of the fight for an alternative and is committed to
opposing the ideologically driven assault on the UK's much valued
public services and welfare state.
This assault on ordinary people is designed to shift the blame
for the economic crisis to the public sector and make working
people pay for a crisis not of our making but caused by the
negligent and irresponsible behaviour of financial institutions,
gambling for profits in an unregulated market for financial
products.
Unite is calling on all members to take this fight into the
workplace and their communities, it’s time to argue for change,
it’s time to argue for the alternative.

The Tory-led government is currently making plans to weaken both
individual employment rights and trade union freedoms as a central
element of its plan to shift the burden for our economic
difficulties onto the backs of working people. Don’t sit back and
allow this to happen!
Hard working people are being conned into paying for a crisis
caused by an irresponsible few in the banking sector. The Tory-led
government argues that cutting public sector spending is the cure
and the cuts strategy ensures that ‘we are all in it together’.
This is simply not true!
The Tory-led government says it is making huge cuts to public
spending to address the economic difficulties we currently face.
People are told on a daily basis by media barons and ‘economists’
that “there is no alternative” and that the present debt and
deficit are not sustainable. We disagree – this is simply not
true.
Unite’s Executive Council unanimously confirms its opposition to
all government spending cuts. We commit ourselves to fight this
ideologically driven assault on our much valued public services and
welfare state.
