The Independent Living Fund is under threat, and soon will be no more.
Unite is at the forefront of the fight to reverse the government’s unlawful decision to close the Independent Living Fund.

The ILF was established to deliver financial support to disabled people so they can live in their communities rather than in residential care, but the government wants to scrap it.

The Save the ILF campaign is calling on people to back the campaign to reverse the government’s plans. Last year the Court of Appeal ruled that the government’s decision to close the ILF was unlawful. On 6 March 2014 the government the ILF would end in June 2015.

That means disabled people with high support needs will become prisoners in their own homes or forced into institutions as it will be impossible for local authorities to maintain equivalent levels of ILF support. Social care funding in England was slashed by £991 million in 2011, £890 million in 2012 and local authority budgets are set to be cut by another 28 per cent in 2013/15.

Still not convinced? Then listen to Gabriel’s story…

Listen to writer and ILF recipient Gabriel Pepper on the government's atrocious decision to close the ILF and leave it to already cash-strapped councils to fund all social care. He has had three brain tumours and major brain surgery. Without the extra care support hours paid for by the ILF, he will not be able to leave his house. We've allowed things to become shameful, he says. And we have. [Click image to watch video or watch here]
